A Practical Guide to Bringing Ancient Symbols into Modern Life
One of the most common misconceptions about runes is that they are only used for divination or predicting the future.
While many modern practices have developed around runes, my own approach is somewhat different.
I see runes as tools for reflection rather than prediction.
For me, runes are not about discovering what might happen tomorrow. They are about understanding where I am today.
In a world filled with constant distractions, endless notifications, and competing priorities, taking even a few moments to pause and reflect can be incredibly valuable. Runes offer a simple but meaningful framework for doing exactly that.
Whether you are completely new to the Elder Futhark or have been studying runes for years, developing a daily reflection practice can help you cultivate mindfulness, clarity, and intentional living.
In this article, I’ll share how I use runes as a reflection tool, why this approach works so well, and how you can create a daily practice of your own.
Why Reflection Matters
Life moves quickly.
Many of us spend our days reacting rather than responding. We move from one task to the next, answer emails, solve problems, pay bills, meet deadlines, and then wonder why we feel exhausted and disconnected.
Reflection creates space.
It gives us an opportunity to step back from the noise and ask:
- How am I feeling?
- What am I focusing on?
- What is working well?
- What needs attention?
- What values am I living by today?
These questions often lead to insights that might otherwise be missed.
The challenge is creating a habit that encourages this kind of reflection consistently.
That is where runes can be surprisingly effective.
Why Runes Make Excellent Reflection Tools
Throughout history, symbols have helped people organise thoughts, ideas, and experiences.
A symbol can communicate a complex concept more quickly than a lengthy explanation.
Runes are particularly effective because each symbol can act as a focal point for contemplation.
For example:
Uruz
Strength, resilience, endurance.
Raidho
Journey, movement, direction.
Berkano
Growth, nurturing, renewal.
Jera
Patience, cycles, rewards through effort.
Ansuz
Communication, wisdom, understanding.
Rather than viewing these themes as predictions, I encourage people to see them as conversation starters.
The rune becomes a prompt.
The reflection becomes the practice.
My Philosophy: Runes as Anchors
When I teach workshops or write about runes, I often describe them as anchors.
An anchor keeps a ship from drifting aimlessly.
Likewise, a meaningful symbol can help anchor our attention when life becomes overwhelming.
A rune gives the mind something specific to focus on.
It interrupts autopilot thinking.
It creates a moment of awareness.
That simple pause is often where meaningful reflection begins.
A Simple Daily Rune Reflection Practice
One of the reasons I recommend this approach is because it requires very little time.
You don’t need an elaborate ritual.
You don’t need special equipment.
You simply need a willingness to pause and reflect.
Step One: Create a Quiet Moment
Find a few minutes where you won’t be interrupted.
This might be:
- First thing in the morning
- During a lunch break
- Before bed
- With your morning coffee
- After a walk
Consistency matters more than duration.
Even five minutes can be valuable.
Step Two: Select a Rune
Choose a rune from your set.
Some people draw one at random.
Others choose intentionally based on what they feel they need.
Neither approach is right or wrong.
The important thing is engaging thoughtfully with the symbol.
Step Three: Observe Before Interpreting
Spend a moment simply looking at the rune.
Notice:
- Its shape
- Its lines
- Its balance
- Any immediate thoughts or feelings
This slows the mind down and encourages observation before analysis.
Step Four: Consider the Theme
Reflect on the themes commonly associated with the rune.
For example:
If you draw Berkano, you might consider growth and renewal.
If you draw Jera, you might think about patience and long-term progress.
If you draw Uruz, you might reflect on resilience and inner strength.
Step Five: Ask Reflective Questions
This is where the real value lies.
Ask questions such as:
- How does this theme appear in my life right now?
- What challenge does it remind me of?
- What opportunity might I be overlooking?
- What action could I take today?
The answers don’t need to be profound.
Small insights often create the greatest long-term change.
Using a Rune Journal
One practice I strongly recommend is keeping a rune journal.
A journal transforms fleeting thoughts into a record of personal growth.
Each day you might record:
- The rune selected
- Its themes
- Your reflections
- Any actions you plan to take
Over time, patterns begin to emerge.
You may notice recurring challenges.
You may identify habits that support your wellbeing.
You may discover progress that would otherwise have gone unnoticed.
The journal becomes as valuable as the runes themselves.
Reflection Rather Than Prediction
This distinction is important.
Many people encounter runes through systems focused on prediction.
My own work takes a different approach.
I believe runes are most powerful when used as tools for awareness.
A rune cannot make decisions for you.
A rune cannot solve your problems.
What it can do is encourage thoughtful reflection.
It can help you notice things you may have overlooked.
It can encourage questions you may not have considered asking.
Ultimately, the wisdom comes from the reflection, not the symbol.
Using Runes During Challenging Times
Some of the most meaningful reflection sessions happen during difficult periods.
When facing uncertainty, change, grief, stress, or major decisions, a rune can provide a useful point of focus.
Not because it provides answers.
But because it helps organise thoughts and emotions.
For example:
A rune associated with resilience may remind you of strengths you’ve forgotten.
A rune connected with patience may encourage a longer perspective.
A rune linked with communication may prompt an important conversation.
The symbol acts as a catalyst for reflection.
Integrating Runes Into Everyday Life
A daily practice doesn’t have to end once you’ve finished reflecting.
Many people enjoy carrying the day’s rune theme with them.
You might:
- Write the rune in a notebook
- Keep it on your desk
- Wear a rune pendant
- Use it as a journal prompt
- Create artwork inspired by it
Throughout the day, the symbol serves as a reminder of your intention.
This transforms reflection from a five-minute activity into an ongoing mindset.
Why This Practice Resonates With Me
As an author, artisan jeweller, and workshop facilitator, I spend a great deal of time thinking about the relationship between symbols and meaning.
What continues to fascinate me about runes is their ability to bridge history and modern life.
They are ancient.
Yet they remain relevant.
They originated as a writing system.
Yet they continue to inspire reflection, creativity, and personal growth.
For me, runes are not about escaping reality.
They are about engaging with it more thoughtfully.
They encourage me to pause.
To ask questions.
To remain curious.
And perhaps most importantly, to be intentional about how I move through the world.
Building Your Own Practice
If you’re new to runes, keep things simple.
Choose one rune.
Spend five minutes reflecting.
Write down your thoughts.
Repeat tomorrow.
There is no need to memorise every meaning immediately.
There is no need for complicated rituals.
There is no need to seek perfection.
The goal is not mastery.
The goal is awareness.
Like mindfulness itself, the value comes through regular practice rather than dramatic breakthroughs.
