Why I Love Runes: The Art, Meaning and Practice Behind My Passion

More Than Ancient Symbols

People often ask me why I am so passionate about runes.

It’s a fair question. After all, these simple angular symbols originated nearly two thousand years ago, carved into stone, wood and metal by people living in a very different world from our own.

For me, though, runes are not relics locked away in museums. They are living reminders of creativity, resilience, curiosity and personal growth. They inspire my writing, influence my jewellery designs, shape my workshops and encourage moments of mindfulness in everyday life.

If I had to sum up my fascination in three words, they would be art, meaning and practice.

It is the combination of those three elements that keeps drawing me back.

Falling in Love with the Beauty of Runes

Before I understood anything about the history of the Elder Futhark, I was captivated by the way the runes looked.

Their bold, straight lines have a timeless elegance. Originally designed for carving into wood and stone, they possess a simplicity that feels both ancient and surprisingly modern.

As a jeweller, I naturally appreciate clean forms and balanced design. Runes lend themselves beautifully to pendants, bracelets and engraved pieces because every line has purpose.

Unlike decorative flourishes that come and go with fashion, the runes have endured for centuries without losing their visual impact.

Sometimes I will sit at my workbench with a piece of stainless steel or a carefully chosen stone and think about how one small symbol can carry so much history and meaning.

That artistic appeal was my first connection to runes, but it certainly was not my last.

The Stories Behind the Symbols

The more I learned, the more fascinated I became.

Runes are not simply decorative marks. They are part of an ancient writing system used by Germanic peoples across Northern Europe. The Elder Futhark, the oldest known runic alphabet, contains twenty four characters, each representing a sound while also becoming associated with broader symbolic ideas.

Some evoke concepts of strength.

Others suggest growth, communication, patience or journeying.

Whether viewed historically, academically or symbolically, these themes resonate because they reflect experiences shared by people across generations.

Life changes.

People seek purpose.

Communities support one another.

Challenges require courage.

Success often demands persistence.

When I study runes, I am reminded that while technology evolves, many human experiences remain remarkably constant.

History Matters

One thing I have become increasingly passionate about is respecting the historical context of runes.

Popular culture often surrounds them with mystery, fantasy and sweeping claims that are difficult to support with evidence.

I prefer a balanced approach.

The archaeological record shows that runes were first and foremost a writing system. They appeared on memorial stones, everyday objects, jewellery, tools and inscriptions that helped people communicate.

Modern interpretations have expanded beyond those original uses, but understanding the history gives us a stronger foundation for appreciating them today.

That is one reason I enjoy writing educational articles and presenting workshops. I want people to leave with curiosity rather than confusion.

The truth about runes is interesting enough without embellishment.

Runes as Mirrors Rather Than Maps

If there is one idea that best describes my personal practice, it is this:

Runes are mirrors, not maps.

I do not believe they dictate what will happen tomorrow or provide fixed answers to life’s problems.

Instead, I see them as prompts that encourage reflection.

Imagine spending a few quiet minutes considering a rune associated with resilience. Rather than asking, “What will happen to me?” you might ask, “Where do I need to be stronger?”

A rune connected with growth might lead to questions about habits, relationships or goals that deserve more attention.

This shift changes the experience completely.

The value comes not from prediction but from the conversation you have with yourself.

Mindfulness Through Symbolism

As someone who juggles writing, jewellery making, workshops and running a small business, I know how easy it is to become consumed by the next deadline or the next market.

Mindfulness does not have to involve elaborate routines.

Sometimes it simply means creating a pause.

Runes provide that pause for me.

Choosing a symbol and reflecting on its theme helps interrupt the constant stream of activity and invites a moment of awareness.

That is why I often describe runes as anchors.

An anchor keeps a ship from drifting.

Likewise, a meaningful symbol can help keep our thoughts from being swept away by distraction.

Bringing Meaning into Jewellery

Designing jewellery has taught me that people are often searching for more than something attractive to wear.

They want connection.

They want a reminder of a loved one, a personal milestone or an aspiration they are working towards.

Runes offer a wonderful language for expressing those ideas.

A pendant inspired by courage may remind someone to face uncertainty with confidence.

A bind rune created around themes of perseverance and hope can become a deeply personal keepsake.

When I create these pieces through Celtic Stag, my aim is not to make an object with a story attached.

It is to create a story that happens to take the form of jewellery.

That distinction matters to me.

Creativity and Curiosity Go Hand in Hand

One of the joys of working with runes is that they encourage lifelong learning.

The more I read about archaeology, linguistics, mythology and cultural history, the more connections I discover.

Questions lead to research.

Research leads to new ideas.

Those ideas inspire books, blog posts, workshop activities and fresh jewellery designs.

Curiosity fuels creativity.

In turn, creativity encourages even more curiosity.

It is a cycle that keeps both my mind and my business growing.

Sharing the Journey

Perhaps the most rewarding aspect of my work is seeing other people discover runes for themselves.

Some attend a workshop because they enjoy history.

Others are drawn by the artistic side.

Some simply want a new way to practise mindfulness or journalling.

There is no single right reason.

Watching someone realise that these ancient symbols can inspire thoughtful conversations about modern life is incredibly satisfying.

It reminds me that education is not about having all the answers.

It is about helping people ask better questions.

Building a Community Around Meaning

Through Celtic Stag, I have been fortunate to meet people from many different backgrounds and beliefs.

Some approach runes academically.

Some connect with them spiritually.

Many simply appreciate their symbolism and historical significance.

I welcome that diversity.

Respectful discussion enriches our understanding and keeps these traditions alive in thoughtful ways.

My goal has never been to tell people what to think.

Instead, I hope to provide reliable information, encourage curiosity and create spaces where learning feels approachable.

Why This Passion Continues to Grow

When I first encountered runes, I was drawn in by their appearance.

Over time, my appreciation expanded to include their history, symbolism and ability to inspire mindful reflection.

Today, they influence almost every aspect of my creative life.

They shape the jewellery I design.

They inspire the books I write.

They provide themes for workshops and articles.

Most importantly, they remind me to pause, think and remain curious.

That combination of beauty and meaning is rare.

It is one of the reasons I continue to explore runes with as much enthusiasm now as when I first discovered them.

An Invitation to Explore

You do not need to be a historian, an artist or a jewellery maker to appreciate runes.

You only need an open mind and a willingness to learn.

Start with their history.

Study the Elder Futhark and the cultures that used it.

Notice the artistry in their forms and the themes they have come to represent.

Then ask yourself what those ideas might mean in your own life.

You may discover, as I did, that the greatest value of runes is not in telling you where to go.

It is in helping you pay closer attention to the path you are already walking.
